Health Tips - Hemolytic Anemia

Posted by Daniel Sunday, February 7, 2010

The main characteristic of a hemolytic anemia is the premature destruction of red cells. The untimely death of red cells can be triggered by many factors, such as poisons, infections, reactions to drugs, or problems encountered when red cells are carried through the circulatory system some hereditary problems also cause hemophiliac anemia.

The rule of thumb for treating a hemophiliac anemia is to find the underlying cause and treat it or when the anemia is caused by a toxic chemical or drug reaction to remove the substance as quickly as possible. In many cases, treating an infection or stopping treatment with a drug that triggers an autoimmune reaction (when the body attacks its own red cells) is all that’s needed to clear up the anemia. If the anemia has been very severe, blood transfusions may be needed.

If red cells are being destroyed by trauma during circulation for example, when they’re trying to pass through the very constricted blood vessels that cause hypertension, or the convoluted blood vessels in cancerous tumors then treatment of the underlying cause is the only solution. Again, transfusions may be necessary in some cases.
