Autologous (meaning from oneself) bone marrow transplant is not used to treat anemia, but a brief description is included here so you won’t confuse the procedure with allogenic bone marrow transplant.
Autologous bone marrow transplant is used as a treatment for certain types of cancers. Marrow is taken from the person during remission a period of time when the cancer is not active in a procedure known as a bone marrow har vest. The harvested marrow is treated with radiation to eliminate any malignant cells, then frozen and stored. If cancer recurs, the person can have his own treated, healthy marrow reinfused into the body, using the same technique described above.
