Exchange transfusion may be used to manage sickle cell and other types of anemia. In this type of transfusion, most of your blood or most of your red cells are replaced by donor blood or donor red cells (called packed red cells) this is done over a period of hours, days, or weeks, depending on the severity of the anemia and your overall health. Potential complications are the same as for simple transfusion.
