In hereditary spherocytosis, large numbers of red cells are destroyed as they pass through the spleen. Not surprisingly treatment involves removing the spleen . Not surprisingly treatment involves removing the spleen (splenectomy), usually in childhood.

If anemia is due to loss of a large amount of health blood for example, after an accident or an operation you may need a simple blood transfusion. Blood transfusions are also given to help manage some hereditary anemia.
