If the bleeding is internal then the underlying cause which can be anything from an ulcer to tumor must be diagnosed and treated. If the bleeding is external caused by a wound or other injury your doctor must first stop the bleeding and then determine how much blood you lost. The type of treatment you’ll receive for the anemia itself will depend on the amount of blood lost, the severity of the anemia and how much iron you have in storage for the production of new red cells.
If you have a mild anemia, your doctor may prescribe iron supplements as described in if there is continuous blood loss due to chronic bleeding, your iron status may not be able to be restored using pills. In this case, iron dextrin may be injected into a muscle or vein. If your anemia is severe, or if you’ve lost a lot of blood quickly, you may need a blood transfusion as well. While your iron status is being restored, it’s also important to follow a healthful diet that includes plenty of iron-rich foods.
