The treatment for this form of iron-deficiency anemia is the same as for others caused by internal bleeding. Depending on the severity of the anemia, supplements may be prescribed, or you may simply need to increase your intake of iron rich foods. A transfusion is rarely needed to treat runner’s anemia.

1/3 cup hummus (garbanzo bean dip available at many grocery stores) 3 to 4 lightly steamed asparagus spears ½ cup broccoli (raw or blanched) 1 raw carrot cut in strips Serves. Each serving =3.1 mg iron and 214 calories.
