In this type of anemia, red cells are unable to utilize iron to form hemoglobin; toxic amounts of storage iron accumulate in the body, but newly produced red cells don’t contain enough iron. If the sideroblastic anemia is caused by drugs or alcohol abuse, it may be reversible that is anemia clears up after the offending drug is withdrawn, or in alcoholics who stop drinking. Other treatments include cheating (the use of drugs that combine with iron and help remove it from the blood) and blood transfusions.
