Prescribing iron supplements without determining the cause of the deficiency is irresponsible. It ignores the possibility that the culprit may be something other than inadequate diet, such as internal bleeding. In some cases you may be getting insufficient amounts of dietary iron and also have an underlying disorder that is health causing iron loss.
The same caution holds true for other types of anemia. Although statistics show that in the majority of cases anemia is triggered by nutritional problems, other possibilities must also be explored.
