The modern nurse has also to find out that all her training in the hospital and/or the nursing school is inadequate unless she is exposed to the homes and places of work of the patients. This helps not only in the four basic steps of assessment, planning implementation and evaluation of nursing care, it also makes it possible for a better, continuous nursing of the patient.
The relationship between the nurse and the hospital with which she is attached is a unique one. For both hospital where no nurse works and also of a nurse who has no hospital to work in even though nursing now includes activities like public and community health in which nurses have to go out in the field and work, the importance of hospitals remains as ever. Though the concept of nursing and the nurse are as old as human history, with little or no change in the basic elements that go in the making of both, hospitals as we know them today, have had a relatively late beginning and have undergone a sea change in the course of time. Resemble very little the hospital of the past did little more than providing for the shelter for those who came to it.
